Daily Schedule of Programs

All of our programs are in the Fairfield Area

When you review our Daily Schedule schedules you will notice that we offer two different types of programs each day of the week.  In all programs we promote self-empowerment and self-reliance.  We provide a safe, respectful and stimulating environment.  We are called “The program with no walls” because we believe that community-based learning opportunities allow growth in all areas of development and independence.  Our personal commitment to the health, vitality and dignity of people with disabilities and life challenges is the reason that Ability to Thrive continues to set the standard of care.

Although the times listed are scheduled, times may change slightly due to extenuating circumstances.

Monday Planet Fitness and Bowling

In this group, our members are picked up at their residence and taken to Planet Fitness where ,from approximately 9:00 am-10:30 am, they  choose the type of exercise machine they would like to use and work-out.  At 10:00 am all members have the choice to go into a separate room where they can work on abs and upper body strength. After the gym, the group goes to The Roll House Bowling Lanes to eat their lunch (packed) and play 2 games of bowling.

We teach proper behavior when out in public and of course we have a great time doing it!

Monday Routson House-Art and Film Studies

In this group, our members start the day off with a planned craft of the day. After the craft, the instructors have many activities planned for the remainder of the morning.  After lunch, the members finish their day off by doing a film study with our instructor. For the film study, the members watch a movie (using a movie projector) and then after the movie they have a discussion about the movie.

This encourages conversation and interaction  among the members.

Tuesday Planet Fitness and Field Trip

In this group, our members are picked up at their residence and taken to Planet Fitness where, from approximately 9:00 am-10:30 am, they  choose the type of exercise machine they would like to use and work-out.  At 10:00 am all members have the choice to go into a separate room where they can work on abs and upper body strength. After the gym, they choose a location for lunch or they may have to pack lunch depending on their choice of location for the field trip; for instance a park, fire station, museum.

We use the field trips as one of the many ways we practice  community integration, but also to visit interesting places and see new things.

Tuesday Routson House and Field Trip

In this group, our members are picked up at their residence and taken to Routson House.   Members start their day off by having a group discussion about health and wellness and what they would like to do for the next field trip day. After this, they go to a location of their choice for lunch and then they go on their field trip.

During the Health and Wellness portion of the day, we emphasize the importance of healthy eating, such as fruits and vegetables and the importance of healthy portions of all types of food.

Wednesday Planet Fitness and YMCA Swimming

In this group, our members are picked up at their residence and taken to Planet Fitness where, from approximately 9:00 am-10:30 am, they  choose the type of exercise machine they would like to use and work-out. At 10:00 am all members have the choice to go into a separate room dedicated to upper body strength. After the gym, they may go to a nearby restaurant.  (All members have the choice to pack their lunch at any time). After lunch they go  to the YMCA for swimming.

Once again, our emphasis is community integration and fun.

Wednesday Routson House- Art & Music

In this group, our instructors ask our members to share their ideas about the days’ activities. For example, the first 30 minutes the group takes time to socialize with each other, then the instructor does a stretching exercise routine to get the group up and moving for the day. 10:00-10:30 the group works on the craft of the day, 10:30-11:00 the members separate into 2 groups and do chosen group activities for the first 15 minutes and switch activities for the last 15 minutes, 11:00-12:00 the members have time to enjoy their lunch and socialize, 12:00-1:15 they play their choice of “Game of the Day”, and lastly from 1:15-2:00 everyone helps to put things away and straighten up their area.

We use this time to teach our members the importance of cleanliness and orderliness but have fun and socialize while doing it!

Thursday Planet Fitness, Lunch at a nearby restaurant & Bowling

In this group, our instructor  plans a theme for each week and bases the craft, activities and music off of that theme. The members start their day off by doing a themed craft and then go on to enjoy the activities that the instructors have planned for the remaining part of the morning .  After lunch the members take time to celebrate that week’s themed music.

Health & Wellness

Planet Fitness – YMCA - Bowling

The benefits of physical exercise are many. One study shows that integrating fitness into an individual on the spectrum has proven that it is able to enhance multiple aspects
of their health. According to the Autism Research Institution, the integration of physical activity is capable of aiding mental health by showcasing an improvement in symptoms of anxiousness or high levels of stress, which can lead to another onset of problems in the future. Alongside these benefits, sleeping improvements are also an effect of physical activity. It has been proven that exercise leads to the production of melatonin; a chemical that is associated with the initiation of sleep

Art & Music & Various Outings
The Gifts of Art & Music

Music and Art are natural therapy, for they can relax, sooth, revitalize, invigorate, inspire and empower anyone who listens to it. Music has probably been my most effective tool for either establishing a harmonious environment that prevents behavioral issues or redirecting those who may be have a behavioral outburst. (Taken from the book, “The Gifts of Autism & Alzheimer’s by Ken Routson) We incorporate an educational component that includes classes on nutrition, stress reduction, positive thinking and group interaction. We
also invite guests to share their talents i.e.: painting, playing an instrument. We perform a play once a year where everyone has a part. All of these activities provide positive interaction with each other and our guests.
